The Second Best Guitarist Of All Time
How many times have you
seen the word “legend” used when referring to
musicians and what is a legend anyway? Maybe
it’s someone who writes some of the greatest
songs of all time such as soul classics,
Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay and Knock
On Wood. It could be someone in one of the
wo rld’s best-ever instrumental bands responsible
for smash hits like Green Onions and
Time Is Tight. Or how about one of the
leading players in a globally successful band
and movie of the same name? Oh, yes and what if
he is voted the second best guitarists of all
time behind Jimi Hendrix by the readers of Mojo
Magazine.
That could only be the
great Steve Cropper who is back in the Northeast
in August. Forget the holidays and the BBQ’s,
don’t miss Cropper!
If Yankee Stadium is "the
house that Babe Ruth built," Stax Records is
"the house that Booker T & The MG's built.”
Integral to that potent combination is MG
guitarist extraordinaire Steve Cropper. As an
A&R man, sound engineer, producer, guitarist,
song writing partner of the likes of Otis
Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others, Steve
Cropper was literally involved in virtually
every record issued by Stax from 1961 through to
the end of 1970. Such credits assure Cropper of
an honoured place in rock history. Take just
three out of his many classic songs, (Sittin'
On) The Dock of the Bay, Knock on Wood and
In the Midnight Hour and Cropper has is
guaranteed immortality.
In 1977 Cropper received a
call from John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, which
resulted in the formation of the Blues Brothers
Band, who recorded three albums and made the
hilarious box-office smash of the same name.
Perhaps the ultimate testament to Steve
Cropper's immense contribution to popular music
over the last five decades was his ranking by
Mojo Magazine in 1996 as the world’s number two
guitarist of all-time (Jimi Hendrix was number
one). And in 2003, Rolling Stone magazine
readers also voted him among the greatest Guitar
Players of all-time.
Cropper comes to Newcastle
as the special guest of another legendary name
and one that is very important to this region,
The Animals. We all know that the line-up has
changed on many occasions with drummer John
Steel the only original member. OK, so no Alan
Price or Eric Burden, but shove that to one side
and this latest incarnation of the Animals has
built up a fabulous reputation throughout other
parts of the UK and Europe for their storming
live gigs.
They do a tremendous job of
faithfully recreating all those timeless Animals
R&B hits such as House Of The Rising Sun, Got
To Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be
Misunderstood, Bring It On Home and
many more. Quoting from one recent review, "The
Animals lived up to expectation and then some,
this was the real thing. Superb vocals, sheer
raw energy and massive respect for the unique
quality of this bands music."
The full line-up is John
Steel, Mick Gallagher (The Blockheads, The
Clash, Paul McCartney), John Williamson and
Peter Barton (Wayne Fontana's Mindbenders) and
they promise an Animals night to remember in
Newcastle. The show will feature wall-to-wall
classics including the Animals stuff and Cropper
doing many of those great songs that he has been
involved with such as Green Onions and
Knock On Wood. This will be a golden
opportunity to get up close and see Cropper, a
true legend in his own right, playing his own
songs. You really can’t miss this one.
Interestingly, both Steve
Cropper and John Steel are inductees into the
Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Steve Cropper with
Booker T and the MG’s (1992) and John Steel with
The Animals (1994).

We are delighted to
promote this gig .... We
have had the great pleasure of working with
Steve Cropper a
couple of times in the past few years. The first time
was when Steve brought the original Blues Brothers
to Newcastle and the second when he was with Booker T
& The MG's which we promoted at the City Hall.
Apart from being a very good guy to work with, he really
is a legendary musician and one that you must see on
stage. Take the time to look at his career, look at who
he has worked with and the songs he has written or
co-written. We all know that the
Animals line-up has
changed since the 60's. There's no Eric Burdon,
no Alan Price, but the music and passion lives
on. CannyGigs has had loads of glowing
reports from other promoters about today's
Animals. It seems
they knock out a brilliant show and if you look at their
gig schedule and the number of times they are asked back
to venues and the picture becomes clear - these guys are
good, very good! It's going to be a
very special gig, it's August and holiday time, so we
hope you can arrange everything to ensure you don't miss
this summer sizzler. |
