Hard Edge
Rockers Return
The Edgar
Broughton Band is back on the road.

It was in the shadows of
the famous Warwick Castle, deep in the heart of
Shakespeare country that one of the most
in-yer-face bands of British rock history was
born in the mid 60’s. The Edgar Broughton Blues
Band was formed by Edgar on guitar and vocals
and his brother Steve on drums and would become
one of the most iconic bands of British rock
history.
Like marauding raiders the
band charged up and own the M1 night after night
playing gigs like the Newcastle Mayfair building
up a reputation as one of the best live bands in
the country. That hard work earned them success
when they were signed Peter Jenner, who was then
managing Pink Floyd and placed them on EMI’s
Harvest label.
Their first album ‘Wasa
Wasa’ was a hard-hitting grungy rock album,
which established Edgar’s trademark gravel
sodden vocals. A single, ‘Out Demons Out’
reached the top forty and they quickly became
the darlings of the festival and college
circuit.
A second album ‘Sing
Brother Sing’ followed in June 1970 and reached
number 18 on the albums chart. A new single
‘Apache Dropout’ hit the top forty in early
1971. Probably their finest album to date was
the self-titled ‘The Edgar Broughton Band,’
which was famous for its meat cover picture. The
photograph had been taken hastily before the
owners of the meat store could see them doing
it, but the album reached a very credible number
28 in the albums chart.
Since 1973 they have split
a few times and enjoyed more than a couple of
“farewell tours”, but you can’t keep a good band
down and they keep coming back. Today, nearly
forty years after it’s formation, The Edgar
Broughton Band is touring again. Their music
still has the hard, rebel edge it’s always had
and ‘Out Demons Out’ is still a relevant today
as it was in 1969.

After the Gig ....
The comment which echoed at the end of the gig was
something like "We had forgotten just how good this band
is ...." plus "The vocals are still amazing ..."
This was a cracking night with an
excellent mix of the EBB's extensive repertoire. It is
refreshing to hear the very best of original rock music
played by a fabulous band who maintained an excellent
rapport with the audience throughout the gig.
Last but certainly not least, they were great to work
with and were out to chat and sign with all the fans
after the gig. We hope to get them back
next year, so watch the web site for details. |
