ARGUS
Wishbone Ash’s
Eponymous Album Performed Live

This month sees
Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash
return to the region with the
Argus tour. Turner was the singer with
the band until he quit, before returning to touring in
2005 with his own band. Turner’s fans argue that he is
the definitive voice and creative force of the original
group.
Many would say that
the 1972 Argus
album demonstrated Wishbone Ash at their very best. They
finally manage to fulfill their promise, doing what they
were best at: combining lush English folk with melodic,
guitar, dominated rock, much in the same way as Led
Zeppelin, but with a twin guitar attack that must’ve
influenced dozens and dozens of following rock bands.
No, Argus has
not got a song as superbly well crafted as
Stairway to Heaven, but you basically get one
successful track after another and it still sounds quite
amazing 36 years later. More than anything, this is an
album for guitar fans who will drool over the
immaculately produced instrumental passages and
interplay.
The album contains
delicate, acoustic fingerpicking and harmonies,
alongside the raw and dirty emotions of pure rock. The
track Leaf & Stream, written by Turner is
an enchantingly gentle folk number, with lovely guitar
parts and suitably fragile vocals. The King Will
Come has a rumbling rhythm with the extended
guitar solo being the icing on the cake, as does the
Warrior, which contains some spectacular guitar
playing during its first minute before growing into
something more melodic.
Watch out for
Sometime World, a fabulous song that has some of
the finest melodies and guitar solos in ‘70s rock. It
starts of on a calm note before reaching a climax and
then launching into a fantastic section containing a
wonderful bass solo, plus vocal harmonies and some of
the best guitar solos you will ever hear. Martin Turner
will be playing the album in its entirety and promises
to add some other classic Wishbone Ash tracks.

Martin
made his first visit to the Cluny a year ago in 2007,
this is the after gig comment .
“Martin was in fantastic form! This band
surpassed everyone's hopes and expectations. The twin
harmonies were spot on.”
“The best thing was hearing
those bass-lines again. Good to hear a few songs live
for the first time.”
“The show was a stormer and the
band did more than justice to the songs, many of which I
thought I would never again have the privilege to
witness live on stage. Martin’s in fine voice and the
interplay of his bass with the guitars was a joy.”
“MT and band exceeded all
expectations. The band were spot on with just the right
feel for Wishbone Ash music..”
“Better than anyone could ever
have expected - the best performances of WA classics
outside of the Mk.1/2 line-ups. It was quite simply the
music as it is supposed to be heard”.
“Martin and band blew us all
away. They really were first rate. The two guitarists
were incredibly polished and of first division quality.” |
