Sax, Soul & Shakuhachi
As a leading musician
you get to play with all the top names, but it’s also good if
you have your own band. Top British soul and funk saxophonist
Snake Davis will be returning
to the Northeast in June to celebrate the release of his 8th
album, Talking Bird.
The new album contains a
mix of styles with bags of soulful searing tenor sax, some funky
flute, a jazz ballad, some fast Latin, there’s a Japanese
influence with the Shakuhachi and even a beautiful ballad
featuring just soprano sax and strings.
Snake the “sax man” is
widely known for his solos on tracks such as Lisa
Stansfield’s Change, M-People's anthemic
Search For A Hero and Moving On Up and Take Thats
hit single A Million Love Songs. He has played and
recorded with artists ranging from James Brown to Paul
McCartney, The Eurythmics to Amy Winehouse – having
recorded on more than 400 tracks in recent years for over 60
artists and played live with dozens more.
Snake is in demand
across the world; playing the saxophone family as well as
flutes, whistles and the ancient Japanese wind instrument, the
Shakuhachi. This unusual instrument was found on his recent 40
date 3 month tour of Japan with the rock star Eikichi Yazawa,
which included his 100th appearance at Tokyo’s famous Budokan
Hall, seating15,000!" This guy is so famous that Japan is
issuing a set of stamps with his face on them.
Snake and his band will
be playing music from the new album as well as some old
favourites. Fens are used to an entertaining, uplifting musical
treat and on this tour they won’t be disappointed. As always,
his love of soul music comes through in his playing as well as
jazz, R&B, Funk and world music.
Snake Davis is the only
saxophonist we know who can literally make his instruments
sing. A thoroughly entertaining evening for anyone who
appreciates the finer art of real music. The band also has
Paul Birchall on keys,
Bryan Hargreaves on drums and
Neil Fairclough on bass.
