Juncos Support
Wishbone Ash
Classic world renowned rock
band supported by Northeast legends
One of the region’s most
popular bands will support legendary rock group
Wishbone Ash at the Newcastle Academy in
October. This ‘big gig’ is a reminder of the
impressive career of the Northeast’s own
legendary group, The Junco Partners. Those of
you old enough to remember, will know that
messers Harcourt and Barker led the merry
musicians on their takeover of the Club A Gogo
residency when the Animals moved into limousines
and down the road to London.
With over four decades of
humping amps and cabs in and out of venues both
at home and abroad, The Junco’s have only lasted
this long because they are extremely good at
what they do. A support slot with Wishbone Ash
is the ideal gig for fans to check them out
again and be treated to three hours of
top-drawer music.
Wishbone Ash are rightly
acknowledged for the stunning quality of their
live performances. Original member Andy Powell
admits to being a perfectionist, but also knows
how to have a good time. “We first played the
Academy last year. It was fantastic, the crowd
were brilliant, really up for it and we just
wanted to keep on playing. This is a wonderful
venue and the right place for the band. I hope
the fans enjoyed it as much as we did. Newcastle
is always a great gig for us so we can’t wait to
get back here.” a delighted Andy Powell
commented after the gig.
It certainly was a
brilliant night as the Informer’s editorial team
can testify – we were there! Wishbone’s
distinctive twin lead guitar sound and close
harmonies make them one of the best live rock
bands in the world. Each set is always
different, as the band likes to ring the
changes. Emerging in 1969, the band has
continued to release quality new albums, but the
fans are always treated to plenty of their old
classics during the gig.

The Junco’s go back even
further having been formed in 1964 and during
those heady years appeared on the same bill as
The Who, Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix,
John Mayall and many others. Indeed they were
the backing band for many a big name including
Howlin Wolf and Freddie King back in 1969. The
Junco’s line-up has two lead guitars and a fine
Rock’n’roll sax player each with the ability to
pull mind-blowing solos out of thin air. In
addition the long running rhythm section
partnership of Fender bass and drums has formed
a solid platform to encourage all to fill the
dance floor.
They split in 1971 as the
lads went off to join various ‘named’ bands such
Jody Grind, Vinegar Joe, Elkie Brooks, Robert
Palmer, Andy Roberts and Mick Abrahams. Barker
and Anderson returned in 1978 to reform the band
with David Sproat and Neil Perry. Over the years
the reputation of the Junco’s has continued to
strengthen by playing good gigs throughout the
region, while still managing to grab the
limelight by guesting on TV shows like Jimmy
Nail’s Spender. One thing is for sure, they
really enjoy their gigs, work hard and always
send the crowd away happy. With well over four
decades of solid R&B under their belts, this is
going to be a cracking gig.
Long serving drummer David
Sproat commented, “We were playing a gig in
Spain during August when the call came through
for this gig and everyone was delighted. It will
be a pleasure to support a band like Wishbone
Ash and of course we are very excited about our
first gig at the new Academy, although we played
there many times when it was the Majestic”
