Eric Burdon
We are delighted to announce the
return of legendary Animals front man, Eric Burdon to
play a gig in Newcastle on Sunday 8th August.
It has been over eight years since Burdon performed in
Newcastle when he thrilled two thousand ecstatic fans.
Still working very hard and touring the world every
year, Burdon’s visits to the Northeast are sadly very
rare.
Acknowledged as one of Northeast’s
greatest ever rock exports, Burdon is rated at the
highest level in both America and Europe. Without doubt
he is an outstanding singer, with lots of big summer
festivals in his schedule, but he is said to be
overjoyed at returning to Newcastle.
His last visit was back in 2002
when he made a triumphant return to his home city - more
than a quarter of a century after his previous gig on
Tyneside. Burdon walked out on stage to tumultuous
applause and, launching into Don't Bring Me Down,
demonstrated that his amazing lung capacity is still
very much intact.
When Burdon split from the Animals
he headed for California, a place he still calls home.
There he achieved further great success when he joined
the band War. Together they ushered in the winds of
change in rock music in 1969. The multi-ethnic band
whose mix of funk, blues, rock and soul hadn't up to
that point been appreciated beyond the confines of being
an accomplished backing band in southern California.
But with the backdrop of the
Vietnam War and the rapidly changing times, the band was
projected into the forefront of a new music scene. And
despite the name War, this was a band with a message of
peace, harmony and tolerance and a front man who had
been in one of the most influential bands of the 60's.
The Animals were part of the
blossoming blues movement of the early Sixties. The
original line-up featured singer Eric Burdon, organist
Alan Price, bassist Chas Chandler, guitarist Hilton
Valentine and drummer John Steel. They drew their
inspiration from American blues and R&B and gravel
voiced Eric Burdon quickly became one of the leading
singers in the country. A further trademark to the
Animals sound was the distinctive and powerful organ
playing of Alan Price.
With the release of House of the
Rising Sun in mid-1964, they became the first
British group after the Beatles to chart a number one
single in America. Other hits followed with I'm
Crying, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and Bring
It On Home To Me. The Animals were a worldwide
success.
Burdon’s return to Newcastle is sure to be well
attended and looks like being one the gigs of
the year.
